Shri Mukherjee is a Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch) from SPA (School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi, India). He then did his post graduation S.M.Arch.S. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, U.S.A. He attended the S.M.Arch.S. programme on Design and Housing as an Inlaks Scholar, with an additional scholarship from MIT.
In 1984, he participated in the National Architectural Design Competition to design The New Wing of the NGMA (National Gallery of Modern Art), New Delhi. The design entry was awarded the first prize, and in 1985 he went on to become a founding partner of the architectural and planning consultancy firm TEAM (Team for Engineering Architecture and Management, New Delhi).
